Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

Year 5 is an inspiring year group here at Woodhouse Primary Academy. It promises to be full of opportunities to explore and learn as well as being creative and curious! Year 5 is one of the most important building blocks before moving on to Year 6 and then onto secondary school.

The children will build on the foundational skills in English, maths, and science, developing more complex problem-solving and critical thinking skills. They begin tackling more challenging texts in reading and writing, improving comprehension, vocabulary, and writing structure. They will develop mathematical concepts such as fractions, decimals, and percentages becoming more advanced and requiring logical reasoning. The children will take on greater responsibility for their learning, managing homework and assignments with less teacher support which encourages them to learn to work independently and collaboratively, improving self-discipline and teamwork.

Year 5 helps students develop the skills needed to excel in Year 6 SATs. The children are also introduced to leadership opportunities (such as joining our school council) to build confidence and decision-making skills. The children will be supported as friendships and social skills become more complex, and they will learn to navigate peer relationships and teamwork. They will develop a growth mindset, resilience, and adaptability, which are crucial for secondary school.

Year 5 is a vital time for academic and personal growth, setting the foundation for a smooth transition to Year 6 and secondary school. Encouraging independence, resilience, and a love for learning in Year 5 can make a significant difference in a child’s future success.
