Computing

Subject Coordinator: Miss A Forster

At Woodhouse Primary Academy, our Computing curriculum is designed to engage, enthuse and excite learners so that they can understand, navigate and safely explore the rapidly changing digital world around them. We seek to provide a high-quality Computing education that fosters a love of learning and equips children with the skills and knowledge to become digitally literate, computationally confident, and safe users of technology as they progress throughout their journey at Woodhouse.

Our Computing curriculum aims to empower pupils to:

· Understand and apply the fundamental principles of computer science.

· Analyse problems and develop computational thinking skills.

· Use technology safely and creatively to express themselves and support learning across the curriculum.

· Become responsible, competent, and confident digital citizens.

Our Computing curriculum is structured around three core computational strands:

1. Computer Science –

Pupils learn how digital systems work, how to design and debug algorithms, and how to write computer programs. This includes understanding concepts like sequencing, selection, repetition, and variables.

2. Information Technology –

Pupils use a range of digital tools to create content such as presentations, digital art, animations, and data handling. They also learn how technology is used in the wider world, including business and industry.

3. Digital Literacy –

Pupils learn how to use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly. They are taught about online safety, digital footprints, and how to report concerns.

We use the Teach Computing scheme to support our delivery of the Computing curriculum.

Digital Leaders

Children from each year group in Key Stage 2 make up our team of Digital Leaders here at Woodhouse Primary Academy. Our Digital Leaders work with Miss Forster to develop their computing skills and knowledge. They then use their acquired skills and knowledge to enhance the delivery of computing across our school.

Pupils Say…

“Computing is fun in my class because we have been using Scratch. We have been learning how to animate things on it.”

“I like this lesson because we get to use the iPads and laptops and do different things on them.”

“I have been learning about AI in my class.”

Online Safety

Online safety is a key focus for us at Woodhouse Primary Academy. Pupils are taught how to stay safe online through regular lessons as well as additional workshops and awareness campaigns. We encourage that parents/carers support online safety at home by having regular discussions with children about how to stay safe online, regularly monitor children’s devices and adhere to age-appropriate guidelines regarding children’s use of online games, resources and social media.
